If you’re thinking of ditching the 9-to-5 and working for yourself then it is important to know the options available and more importantly, what each one means! Today, we’re zooming in on the differences between contracting and fractional consulting. Carry on reading to learn more.

What is contracting?

Those in contractor roles tend to work on a project-by-project basis. They are hired to complete a specific task or get the company from A to B using their specialist knowledge.

For instance, a business may hire a social media manager on a contractual basis to help launch a campaign and improve its online presence.

In most cases, the company in question will seek the help of a contractor when the specialised skills needed do not exist internally.

The relationship between the contractor and the end client typically draws to a close once the defined goal has been achieved. This also means that employee perks such as pension schemes and sick pay are not included in the contract (unless you work with an umbrella!).

Why is fractional consulting different to contracting?

Like contractors, fractional consultants are usually specialists in their field and also help businesses ‘fill a gap’ in their offering as and when required. However, where fractional consultants and contractors differ is that fractional constants do not usually work on projects – but rather, provide a fraction of their time to help solve a problem.

Furthermore, fractional consultants are usually at an executive level and will come in to help a business strategise for the future, based on company values and long-term targets. A singular project, such as starting a podcast would be more attuned to a contractor, on the other hand.

We hope you found this blog helpful in helping you define the next step in your career journey. Whichever route you choose, contracting and fractional consulting are both excellent choices for those who require flexibility in their work life.
