Looking to bag your next contract role? Here are three tips to boost your CV so you can optimise your chances of impressing your prospective employer (or ATS robot!).
1. Buddy up
Editing your CV alone can be a daunting, and quite frankly, boring task. However, if you go over your CV with a trusted friend or fellow contractor (ideally someone who specialises in the same sector), you’ll find the task a lot less arduous. Hey, it might even be enjoyable – especially if you throw a coffee shop trip or takeaway in the mix!
Having a second pair of eyes to look over your resume is incredibly advantageous as they might spot something that you’ve missed or remind you of that great achievement from work that you’d forgotten to mention. Repay the favour by offering to edit their CV and you’ve got yourself a win, win situation!
- Ask AI
Not can ChatGPT help you in your love life (just try asking it for Tinder chat-up lines), but it can also supercharge your chances of landing a great job too. By using the right ‘prompts’, you can get AI to locate skills gaps in your CV and help tailor it for your next contracting role. This method will save you a lot of time when it comes to the application process and will ensure that you’re putting your best foot forward.
However, we wouldn’t advise relying on AI to create your whole resume – rather, use it an ideas generator from which to build your final product.
- Keywords are your best friend
Did you know that at least three-quarters of all CVs are read by an automated system? One way to stand out to the robot you want to impress is by including keywords. These are usually qualifications and skills commonly associated with the role in question. But how do you know which words are the right words? Try starting with the job application as this will give you a pretty accurate overview of the company’s ideal candidate. For example, if ‘experienced copywriter’ is one of the essential skills listed, you know to include this on your CV. It’s a bit like SEO – our best advice is to put yourself in the shoes of the employer and ask yourself what keywords you would be looking up on your search for the perfect candidate.
