Are you checking your tax and National Insurance Contributions (NIC) on each of your payslips?…
As a busy contractor, often the last thing you want to do is deal with your tax returns. But what if you could authorise someone to deal with HMRC on your behalf?
The good news is that you can! Carry on reading to find out how…
Decide who to choose
Whether it’s a friend, agent or family member the first thing you need to do is decide who you’re going to allocate as your ‘trusted helper’.
They can then register to manage your tax online and will be able to:
- Ensure you’re paying the right amount of Income Tax
- Check/update your personal tax account
- Check/update your taxable benefits (company cars or medical insurance only)
- Claim a tax refund
Remember, you can only be a ‘trusted helper’ for five people maximum.
Hire a paid agent
Alternatively, you can appoint a ‘paid agent’ (aka an official tax advisor or accountant).
Before proceeding, ensure that your selected ‘agent’ complies with HMRC’s agent standards. Once HMRC is satisfied with their eligibility, they will provide you with next steps.
There are several methods to authorise an agent, including:
- Online submission
- Filling out paper forms
- Utilising your business tax account
- Employing a digital handshake (where your agent sends you a link)
Ask someone to act as an intermediary
If you don’t feel comfortable with someone having access to your online tax account, you can opt to have an ‘intermediary’, who can help you fill in forms and ask HMRC any questions you may have etc. This can be a friend, family member or voluntary organisation.
Your online tax account will not be accessible to your chosen intermediary.
What happens next?
Regardless of whether you have selected a paid agent, a trusted helper, or an intermediary, you will retain full legal responsibility for your taxes.
Remember to always do your research before appointing an agent or if you’re choosing a family member or friend – make sure they are trustworthy!
