As a contractor, Christmas can be daunting - especially for those trying to juggle working…
If you are someone who works contract to contract, it is likely you write more job applications than the average Joe. Today, we thought we’d hone in on the cover letter stage, and share some tips on how to ace your next one.
Research, research, research
Before you even open that word doc, make sure you’ve researched the company you’re applying to from the inside out. Explore the website, make some notes on their values, stalk LinkedIn profiles and get the insight you need to make a good first impression. Use this knowledge to make your cover letter stand out as a nod to the hiring manager that you’ve put the effort in. For example, mention how you align with their goals as a company – or discuss a recent campaign they did and what you liked about it.
Don’t copy and paste
As a contractor, it can be tempting to just copy and paste your last cover letter as it was probably for a very similar role to the one you’re applying for currently. However, it is so important to tailor each cover letter you write specifically to the company you’re applying for. This is because, nine times out of ten, it is really obvious that you have done so and gives your application an impersonal, and therefore careless, tenor.
Show off your experience
Using the STAR method can be a really useful way of outlining your experience and demonstrating why you’re the best candidate for the role. The main goal is to focus on your achievements and to highlight examples of when your expertise helped move a company closer towards its goals.
Don’t forget about personality
You’re not a robot, so don’t write like one! Whilst it’s important to be professional in your cover letter, don’t completely turn off your personality. We recommend avoiding formulaic language and using specific examples to explain who you are and why you’re a great fit.
Proofread!
When you’re really getting into the zone, it can be easy to make typos in your cover letter. That’s why it is always important to read it over before you send it off. We know you’re probably sick of the thing by now and just want it gone – but wouldn’t it be a shame if all that hard work was tossed aside because of one careless spelling mistake? It’s also a good idea to ask a family member or a friend to glance over it as they may spot something you didn’t. Alternatively, you could download Grammarly which will automatically check your work for errors.
