In this blog, we share three signs that may indicate it’s time to consider switching umbrella companies.

  1. Compliance concerns
  • If you notice questionable or unethical tax practices by the umbrella company, such as advising you to engage in tax evasion or non-compliance, it’s a serious red flag. Compliance with tax regulations is crucial, and any company suggesting otherwise could get you in serious trouble with HMRC. Common signs of tax evasion from an umbrella provider include promises of take-home pay higher than 80% or dodgy payslips that don’t match up to the bank transactions.

2. Financial transparency issues

  • Delayed payments or errors: If you experience delays in receiving your payments or encounter frequent errors in your financial statements, it could indicate a lack of financial transparency. Reliable umbrella companies should have accurate and timely payment processes.
  • Hidden fees or unexplained deductions: Be wary of umbrella companies that have hidden fees or make deductions from your earnings without providing clear explanations. Transparent and upfront fee structures are essential for building trust.

3.Poor customer service

  • Lack of responsiveness: If your umbrella company is consistently slow to respond to your queries, concerns, or requests for information, it can be a sign of poor communication. Prompt and clear communication is crucial for a smooth working relationship.
  • Inadequate support: If you find that the customer support provided by the umbrella company is unsatisfactory, or if you struggle to get assistance when needed, it may be a warning sign. A reliable umbrella company should offer strong support to its contractors.

Finding a new umbrella company

When choosing an umbrella you need to think about your priorities, i.e. do you want more holiday pay? Support getting a mortgage? Employee benefits? Once you’ve decided what you’re looking for, you can narrow down your options. However, remember to look for the red flags above when shopping around and always pick an umbrella that is accredited by either Professional Passport or FCSA.
