Are you checking your tax and National Insurance Contributions (NIC) on each of your payslips?…
HMRC has issued a warning to tax credit claimants regarding a number of new scams. Here’s a brief overview of typical fraudster favourites to steer clear of…
1. Cold calls/automated messages
This can be an automated message claiming you owe HMRC up to £500 and will be arrested immediately if you don’t pay. Sometimes you will be asked to pay in vouchers or prepaid cards for Amazon or Google Play.
2. Emails or texts
Typically, scam emails and texts will claim that your tax payments haven’t been received or that your details aren’t up to date.
3. False information about your National Insurance Number
For example, the scammer might tell you that your National Insurance Number has been linked with fraudulent activity.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said, “Tax scams come in many forms and we’re urging customers to be alert to the tactics used by fraudsters and never to let yourselves be rushed.
“If someone contacts you saying they’re from HMRC and asks you to give personal information or urgently transfer money, be on your guard. Search ‘HMRC scams’ advice on GOV.UK to find out how to report scams and help us fight these crimes.”
