Before we crack open the champagne and wave goodbye to 2023, let’s consider what you could do in the New Year to improve your life as a contractor and say goodbye to any unwanted stress…

1.Do more for yourself

There’s no point being self-employed if you’re not going to enjoy the flexibility and freedom that comes with it! This year, make an effort to take time off and book some exciting plans in with your friends and family. It’s also important to invest in yourself and your wellbeing. So before work (or after work if you’re not a morning owl), get into the routine of moving your body – whether this is just a walk to the coffee shop, or a cheeky gym session, get those endorphins pumping! Part of looking after yourself is also learning to say ‘no’. Boss asking you take on more than you can chew? Say no! Friend wants to hang out during a busy project period? Say no! You get the gist…

2. Master the art of juggling (without dropping the balls)

Being a contractor can sometimes feel like being a circus performer. This year, resolve to become a master juggler of tasks. Balance your projects like a pro, ensuring none of those proverbial balls hit the ground. Time management tools are a great shortcut for this. Whether it’s project management apps or scheduling software, find what makes your workload disappear.

Additionally, take a close look at your daily routines and identify any bottlenecks or time-wasting activities. Are there repetitive tasks that can be automated? Are there unnecessary meetings that could be replaced with concise emails or quick calls? By identifying and addressing these efficiency roadblocks, you’ll not only save time but also reduce stress in your professional life.

3. Find a compliant umbrella

Arguably one of the worst things about being a contractor is the lack of consistency when it comes to pay. Some clients may need chasing, others might send you the wrong amount (infurating, we know!) and some might just be impossible to get a hold of. Whatever the issue, getting paid shouldn’t constantly be an uphill battle. This is where us brollies come in! Here at Mint we are dedicated to ensuring each and every one of our contractors is paid on time, every time. We also take full responsibility for tax deductions and NIN contributions etc, so you don’t have to spend your precious time filling out tax return forms (you’re welcome!). When choosing an umbrella company to work with it is vital to check whether they are legitimate – otherwise you could land yourself in trouble with HMRC. Luckily for you, our blog 5 tips to spot an umbrella tax avoidance scheme explores the warning signs to look out for when hunting for a new umbrella provider.

Mint wishes you all a Merry Chritsmas and a very happy and successful New Year! Remember, we’re still here over the festive period, so feel free to get in touch on 0203 967 6846 if you have any queries or want to find out more about working with us.
