Tired of chasing clients, sorting out your own tax deductions and having zero employment benefits? As a contractor, working with an umbrella company can be a really attractive option which can save you a lot of time and hassle. But where do you start? Don’t worry, it’s quite a straightforward process, and we’ve outlined it below for your ease and convenience!

1. Explore your options

There are a wealth of umbrella companies out there, but finding one that is compliant with UK tax rules and HMRC legislation can be a challenge. Not sure where to start your search? Check out Professional Passport’s list of approved providers or the FCSA’s accredited umbrella companies

Those working through a recruitment agency may just be given a ‘Preferred Supplier List’ of brollies they know and trust. However, it is still crucial to do your research and check that your chosen company is recognised as compliant and ethical

2. Get in touch

Once you’ve decided which umbrella you want to work with, it’s time to get in touch! The registration process shouldn’t take too long and you can usually do it over the phone or online

Before you contact the umbrella provider, make sure you have all the relevant documents to hand, such as your passport, a P45 and your work permit/visa if you are an overseas worker.

We would also recommend using this opportunity to ask any questions you may have – especially if this is your first time umbrella contracting. You can also ask for a pay illustration to get an idea of what your take-home pay will look like.

3. Confirmation and onboarding

Upon successful review of your registration form and contract, the umbrella company will send you a confirmation. This may include further details on their onboarding process. Be attentive to any additional steps or requirements they may have, and ensure prompt completion to expedite your onboarding.

4. Your end client/recruitment company will be informed

Your brolly will now get in contact with your end client or recruitment agency so that they can sign the contract, agree to terms and conditions and most importantly, set up your payroll!

5. Ready, set, go!

Congratulations, you’re all set up and ready to go. Just remember to send your signed timesheets to your umbrella provider so they know how much to pay you. The umbrella you’re working under should inform you of how and where to submit these.
