Are you checking your tax and National Insurance Contributions (NIC) on each of your payslips?…
As a working parent, finding reliable and affordable childcare can be a full-time job in itself. While being a contractor brings more flexibility than the average 9-to-5, it’s still important you have childcare in place for days when you know you’ll be working late or when you get pulled into a last-minute meeting with a client. In this blog, we share some ideas for childcare that are cost-effective and easily accessible.
Nursery
In the UK, all children aged 3-4 are entitled to 30 hours of free childcare a week. Find your nearest nursery here.
Breakfast club
If you often find yourself frantically running around in the morning, trying to get everyone ready so you can get to work on time, then breakfast club might just be your saving grace. Most schools run a breakfast club at least half an hour before school starts, meaning parents can get to work on time without having to deal with the school rush.
After school clubs
Find out more about the after-school clubs running at your child’s school so you can pick them up a little later now and again. From football to drama and chess; there’s always something interesting for your child to get involved with.
Playdates
Get chatting with the parents at your child’s school and get some playdates in the calendar. This is a free and effective childcare method as it means you can take turns to host, and help one another out on days when one of you needs to be in the office or work late.
Family and friends
Don’t forget that your friends and family are there to help out! We’re not suggesting they become your primary method of childcare, but it’s OK to ask now and again if you need a loved on to pick your child up from school or mind them a little longer while you work. Always offer to return the favour, or say thank you by cooking dinner or buying them a coffee to show your appreciation!
Hire a childminder
If you’re fortunate enough to be able to afford a childminder, then this option could save you a lot of stress and allow you to be more flexible with your work hours. Visit the government website to find registered childminders in your area.
How is childcare changing in the UK?
As part of the Spring Budget 2023, the Chancellor announced that parents with children of nine months and older will receive up to 30 hours of free childcare a week.
This will be rolled out in the following stages:
- April 2024 – 15 hours of free childcare for parents of two-year-olds.
- September 2024 – 15 hours of free care for children from nine months and older.
- September 2025 – 30 hours of free childcare for under-5s.
