Compliant umbrellas typically offer three types of insurance: professional indemnity, public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance. In this blog, we offer a brief overview of these different types of insurance so you can better understand how you are protected as an umbrella contractor.
Professional indemnity
Professional indemnity insurance is designed to protect contractors, freelancers and business owners if the end client is dissatisfied with the service provided. For example, it will cover legal fees in the scenario where a business is making claims against you.
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is for those working with the public and protects the contractor from liability in the event of an injury or loss to a team member. It is important to note that umbrella providers are under no legal obligation to have this type of insurance, although most will as most contractors will be in contact with the public at some point during an assignment.
Employer’s liability insurance
Employer’s liability insurance is for the umbrella provider and covers claims made by their employees (aka the contractors). Again, this includes accidents and incidents that happen while the contractor is working on the project.
Remember, it is always important to talk directly with your umbrella provider if you have any concerns.
